Indiana Windows User Group

Has anyone installed the final release of Vista yet? I have Vista Business installed and everytime I try to install an app, I am getting an 'Invalid Drive H:'. This happens when trying to install from a CD, Network Share, or a file on the local machine.

 I had no problem with Office 2007 or McAfee 8.5, but cannot install Adobe Reader 8.0 (from a downloaded file) or Digital image Suite Anniversary Edition (from CD).

My H: drive is mapped to a share using the 'Profile' path in my User properties. I have tried removing the mapped drive and still get the same results. I have tried mapping H: to a local drive (both CD/DVD ROM drives) with the same results. I tried not having mapped to anything and nothing.

This would happen occassionslly in WinXP PRO, but would be resolved usually by running the install from the local machine or remapping H:, but this does not appear to be the case in Vista.

Any help would be appreciated. I have searched for this error and find no helpfull remedies yet.

When do you see the message?  After the installer has extracted the files?  Also, do you have the TEMP or TMP variables set?  What are they set to?  I've seen this before but not on Vista.

Thanks for the reply Bob, but I found tha problem. Seems that when I moved my 'Documents' folder to the H: drive I had mapped to a folder on an external USB drive placed an entry in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ConrtrolSet001\Services\LanManServer\Shares and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ConrtrolSet002\Services\LanManServer\Shares registry keys. It also had H$ listed as a share.

I removed the drive mapping and changed the keys to the actual drive letter of the external drive and removed the reference to the H$ share and all works well now.

I was able to get all the apps required installed after making these changes.

It would seem that when you go into the elevated security mode during installation, all your shares are lost! The reason being that you are now “Administrator” and the shares are user specific. Makes sense in theory but is mucho annoying in practice. So here's how you solve it:

1. Disconnect the previously mapped network drive from Windows Explorer.
2. Right click on Command Prompt in the Start Menu and select Run As Administrator.
3. Type "Net Use y: \\servername\sharename"
   
   
4. Exit out of the command prompt
5. Open Windows Explorer
6. Click 'Map network drive' menu item
7. Select the y: drive and typed \\servername\sharename into the Folder box.

Not very intuitive, but it works! EASIER WAY: If you already have a mapped network drive, just do steps 2-4 and it should work...essentially you map it once for the user, once for the administrator.
